Ransomware attack stalls Kia Motors

There seems to be no end to the spate of Ransomware attacks targeting major manufacturers. This week the target was Kia Motors America, the California-based auto giant with nearly 800 dealerships across America.

Ransomware attacks have steadily been increasing due to the success of  prior extortion efforts, which prove lucrative for the criminals and devastating for their victims.

In the Kia case, the ransom demand issued by the attackers known as DoppelPaymer is the equivalent of $20 million in bitcoins. This is the cost of a decryptor and to prevent the leaking of sensitive company data.

These big-money cybercrimes can cost its victims millions of dollars in lost business in a short period of time. Consumers whose purchases of new vehicles are prevented by the Kia system attack are frustrated, and many could take their business elsewhere.
